Customer Review: Terrific collection of 27 short stories by some of the best contemporary fiction and crime fiction writers at work. The book has a classic pulp fiction look--purposely, I assume--and will win no awards for cover design, layout or even proofreading, but the substance is mostly pure gold, and golden, as each story features some of the most memorable senior citizens of every stripe imaginable, that you'll ever encounter in print.
The stories range from hilarious to tragic. They are often gritty, occasionally violent, and at their best chronicle the elderly in pursuit of justice with a sense of controlled outrage or just sang froid. They don't always succeed, but they make very b...

Customer Review: I was disappointed to find that these copies do not include the original green eyeglasses to use once you've entered into OZ. The original editions did include the eyewear but not these. As a result, I now have four OZ books to return to Amazon due to an ever expanding series of mistakes, including online customer reviews that stated the glasses were included. The book itself is fine as an example of Lisbeth Zwergers work but the omission of the glasses is detrimental to the story and the illustrators intent.

A must for anyone who likes to cook - and eat!

by Beatrice de Regniers
Amazon Price: $14.03
Customer Review: This book is a bit longer than many picture books, and the illustrations aren't as colorful as in more modern books, so some smaller children may have trouble sitting through it. However, with the right age range, this book is wonderful.
A little boy is just randomly invited to the palace for the tea (every day in a week, in fact). So each time he brings a guest, another animal, until Saturday when he turns the tables and they all go to the zoo to eat their tea instead.
It's sweet, it's simple, it has a gentle rhyme, my nieces love it - I love it! You definitely want to check this one out.

Customer Review: This is a great book about a real village in Cameroon Africa. As a teacher, I actually use this book to teach surface area and volume. After reading the book, we determine the surface area and volume of the two houses and then compare them. It provides a great real-life application of a "boring" Geometry concept.

Customer Review: I realize that people tend to ignore Scottish folktale beyond the conceps of banshees and a few other monsters, but this charming story truly captures the spirit of the Scottish common people as, with just a touch of assumed magic, a single hut becomes a comfort to many. Hogrorian's illustrations are one of the finest features and invoke nostalgia to the old country. It's repetitive enough for small children, though anyone should be able to feel the spirit of this timeless message and the hills of Scottland.

by Ernest Hemingway

Customer Review: The Garden of Eden is both a frustrating and fascinating work. Part of Hemingway's posthumous, unpublished manuscripts, the work shows the late Hemingway fighting to redefine himself as an artist. This work deals with gender issues, the nature of creativity, colonialism and post-colonialism. These were all meaty topics for post-war writers, and here Hemingway led the pack. But his failing mental and physical health prevented him from completing this project.
This edition of The Garden of Eden is a significant reduction of the original manuscript. An entire parallel plot was eliminated; the editor decided to close the novel even though the manuscript continues for some 80 pa...

by Ronald Firbank
Amazon Price: $19.75
Customer Review: As has been pointed out by the other reviewers, Firbank is an excellent writer. I have found his books difficult to locate, until I finally got online and discovered Amazon -- what a wonderful book store this is! I just want to mention, for those who enjoy solid, informative and entertaining literary criticism, there is a magnificent study of Firbank's Works: PRANCING NOVELIST -- IN PRAISE OF RONALD FIRBANK, by Brigid Brophy (Macmillan 1973). I reproduce the text from the front inside-flap:
"Brigid Brophy's study of Ronald Firbank must be one of the most penetrating and sympathetic explorations ever undertaken by one writer into the mind of another. The title PRANCING NOVELI...
