Customer Review: This isn't what I'd call a 'normal' book. It reminded me of childrens books, with just a few sentences per page, trying to sound funny. To be fair, a few points were funny, but the whole book certainly isn't LOL. You can flip through this book in a short time, and singletons may be able to relate to it, but over all I wouldn't recommend the cost of the shipping and handling, in my opinion.

by Ronald Firbank

Customer Review: As has been pointed out by the other reviewers, Firbank is an excellent writer. I have found his books difficult to locate, until I finally got online and discovered Amazon -- what a wonderful book store this is! I just want to mention, for those who enjoy solid, informative and entertaining literary criticism, there is a magnificent study of Firbank's Works: PRANCING NOVELIST -- IN PRAISE OF RONALD FIRBANK, by Brigid Brophy (Macmillan 1973). I reproduce the text from the front inside-flap:
"Brigid Brophy's study of Ronald Firbank must be one of the most penetrating and sympathetic explorations ever undertaken by one writer into the mind of another. The title PRANCING NOVELI...

Customer Review: This is a series of stories about an antique wedding dress and chest. It also is about family and love. The book begins with Charity Davis, a recently orphaned lady on the Oregon Trail. Circumnstances have her joining wagons with Ethan Cole and his two kids who are motherless. ( Not to mention Ethan is wifeless due to her tragic death)Faith in God leads her to getting the thouandth button on her button string, given to her by her soon to be husband. Faith Cole thinks she has no hope of wearing her mothers wedding dress because one of her legs is longer than the other. The only men who want her are ones who only want money. A trip to her great grandma's is to take her mind off reality but whe...

Customer Review: I just recently (in the past couple of months) began reading Mas' works, starting with Harvest Son: Planting Roots in American Soil. I have been so captivated by his experiences that I finished five books (Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm, Letters to the Valley: A Harvest of Memories (Great Valley Book), Four Seasons in Five Senses: Things Worth Savoring and now Heirlooms) without a break.
Heirlooms is a continuation of Letters written for his column in the Fresno Bee and, to me, goes beyond "Letters". Mas is a great storyteller; weaving stories of the connections among all of us and our past and present, sometimes starting with a description of a simple o...

Customer Review: As a fellow Brooklynite (and short story writer) I was instantly intrigued about the prospect of Hard Boiled Brooklyn: A collection of dark short stories in the vein of the rival "Brooklyn Noir" series.
All in all the collection of stories (about 17 in total, and marketed as "95 cents each") are chock full of the colorful characters and locations that have become synonymous with Brooklyn.
Some stories feel a bit more "authentic" then others, with some authors throwing up a sort of false "alternate-Brooklyn" where locations don't quite add up.
Judging by your taste, about two thirds of the stories work, with about four of five will have you rollin...

Customer Review: I truly enjoyed this collection. A few seemed rather strained to have a musical collection, but it gets off to a good start with "File Under Jazz", a very quiet and haunting story as one anticipates the ending, and then the 2nd story about the guy who thinks his iPod is communicating with him. Lescroart's contribution was the major disappointment to me, but all in all, this is a good book to read, but do have the attatched CD playing at the same time for maximum effect.
