Heirloom: Notes from an Accidental Tomato Farmer
by Tim Stark
Amazon Price: $11.20
Customer Review: I was quite disappointed in this book: it does not grip you, the narrative is not linear, and I quite missed what I was really looking for: the story of the making of a farm. This does not come across well. For a nice account of Greenmarket in NY, read "stronger than dirt", it is MUCH better.

Customer Review: This book is excellent for the history it provides. Many times when dealing with heirlooms you do not get a good history of the plant (where it is from, how it was named) This book gives a good background and was fascinating for me. I enjoyed the cultural information that is lacking in the basic HOW TO books.
If you are looking for a HOW-TO book for your region or area, this may not be helpful for you. I loved this book and enjoyed reading it. It is a must for any serious gardner, but again, you have to take into account your geographic area when planting. This book is a good addition to any small garden library.

Customer Review: An absolutely beautiful book - the photographs are simply gorgeous. This is the book that got me started with heirloom gardening. The glorious diversity of heirlooms leaps off the pages. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, beets, kales, winter squashes, and potatoes are all presented in a rainbow of colors, shapes and sizes on double page spreads.
The author starts with an overview of the origins of different food crops, followed by an explanation of the importance of preserving in the face on increasing pressure for uniformity. She continues with a discussion of gene banks and seed saving organizations and basic seed saving techniques for the home gardener. The book ends ...

Customer Review: If you never knew what an "heirloom" was in terms of gardening, you will after this read. I came away from this book with a whole new perspective, admiration, and appreciation for maintaining the integrity of each individual plant, not matter what it was.
This provides insight on all the aspects of heirlooms from the government, scientists, seed companies, and home gardeners. What started out as an article for the New York Times culminated into this book which is highly informative from someone who knew nothing in the beginning and learned more than most of us ever will about the subject.
