Customer Review: I was not sure about this book, but was interested in possibly growing heirloom tomatoes. The Heirloom Tomato turned out to be a surprisingly good book. Outstanding photography of all the varieties, plus detailed information on each tomato, its history, flavor, appearance and use. Information on raising heirlooms, saving seeds, and even breeding is included.Tomatoes have never been so interesting. Definitely a worthwhile investment, even if you don't grow any.

Customer Review: This book got me hooked on vegetable gardening at the age of 62. It is simple, strauight forward, and encouraging. Dr. Male's book introduced me to heirloom tomatoes and the explantions of what to expect and how to solve or avoid problems made me feel comfortable to go forward. I bought the book two years ago, and I still go back to review and look up things that I forgot. The book also has great pictures of the tomatoes that she writes about.

Customer Review: Currently, I'm on my third copy of Passalong Plants. The first two were loaned out to fellow Southern gardeners and when their reactions were so enthusiastic, I gifted the books to them and bought myself another one (on Amazon, of course). Being a Southern gardener, raised by Southern gardeners who rarely purchased a plant for their extensive collections, this book truly struck home. I laughed myself to tears at points in the book, remembering similar incidents with my own grandmother, mother, aunts, cousins, and neighbors. When my grandmother passed, one serious point of contention between the relatives was who would be digging up the peonies and the lily of the valley! Besides being v...

Customer Review: I was quite disappointed in this book: it does not grip you, the narrative is not linear, and I quite missed what I was really looking for: the story of the making of a farm. This does not come across well. For a nice account of Greenmarket in NY, read "stronger than dirt", it is MUCH better.

Customer Review: I find myself going back to this book for reference so often while I'm researching plants to consider for planting our garden of around 1860.
I just love to read the discriptions of the plants and where they originated.

Customer Review: I had a heritage garden to restore and needed some information on the types of plants grown around the 1800's. This book was the perfect answer to all my questions.
The format is perfect for getting the pertinent data without having to read through pages of trivia. Although at the end of each plant story there is a remark section that does give you something historically interesting. Among other things you are given the introduction date, zone, description, earliest american citation, design notes, and more. There are some modern pictures of the plants but they are not really necessary. I liked seeing the old drawings and photos. The book is divided by plant groupings: ...

Customer Review: This book is excellent for the history it provides. Many times when dealing with heirlooms you do not get a good history of the plant (where it is from, how it was named) This book gives a good background and was fascinating for me. I enjoyed the cultural information that is lacking in the basic HOW TO books.
If you are looking for a HOW-TO book for your region or area, this may not be helpful for you. I loved this book and enjoyed reading it. It is a must for any serious gardner, but again, you have to take into account your geographic area when planting. This book is a good addition to any small garden library.

Customer Review: Most gift ideas I'm seen in crazy quilt (or any sewing project for that matter)are about the equivalent of fourth grade Mother's Day projects. This book, however, has several has delightful things I'll make that are appropriate for neighbors, friends, family and self.
