Heirloom Recipes

Recipes are one of the most popular heirlooms that have been handed down from generation to generation. For hundreds of years recipes have been handed down to family members and friends to keep them alive. New brides in the past and even today receive recipes for their shower and wedding gifts. Sometimes it might not only be the recipe that is treasured, but the memories that come along with it. Recipes used at holiday time are handed down for just that reason. Children and Grandchildren want to keep those joyous memories and feelings alive and with just an aroma they can bring Grandma or Grandpa back even if just for a moment in time.
Canning recipes are also old time favorites to pass on. In the past canning was done more out of necessity but today it is done more for traditional and memory reasons. Canning reminds us of a rustic style of living when families would grow their own fruits and vegetables and pick them to preserve for the months ahead. Canning now can bring one into the past and make them remember sitting on the porch with grandpa shucking peas. Remembering the hot summer days of canning with Grandma in her kitchen with her calico apron as the smell of peaches cooking on the stove are among memories that one will never forget. From jams and jellies to pickles and even meats these canned items are a great way to get the "down home" taste and bring back the fond memories of yesterday.
Canning is the preservation of food being packed and sealed in airtight containers. The different methods used for canning are boiling, pasteurization, refrigeration, freezing, drying and vacuum treatment.

Customer Review: I saw an episode of Bobby Flay's "Throwdown" with the Brass Sisters. They were so entertaining that I found myself interested in their cookbook, specifically "Heirloom Baking". I am not one to buy a cookbook without trying a few recipes first, so I headed to my local library where I found the book. I have had it for 3 weeks, have tried a few recipes, and I have to say, I am glad I didn't buy it. Let me start by saying that I am an experienced baker (30 years). I have tried many a recipe, an...

Wines to go with them, salads to make out of them, chutneys & how to make preserves, soups, salsas, bruschettas to make out of them the list goes on. They also have a chapter on "growing and cultivating". I've only had one salad out of this book since I just received it and it was delicious.
